Job description

Junior Construction Project Manager | Main Contractor | Essex | £27,000–£30,000 + Training & Progression

Site & Office | Healthcare & Education | Experienced Project Management Team

Do you already have experience within construction and want to build a career in project management?

An established regional main contractor is looking to appoint a Junior Construction Project Manager to join its project management team in Essex, combining office-based learning with practical experience on live construction projects.

This opportunity would suit somebody with a site, trade, technical or construction-office background who wants to develop their practical knowledge into the skills needed to manage projects. You do not need previous Project Manager experience, but you must bring relevant construction experience, reliability and a genuine willingness to learn.

Working alongside experienced Project Managers, you will gain practical exposure to planning, procurement, site coordination, commercial management and handover. As your confidence develops, you will take on increasing responsibility, with a clear route towards managing your own projects.

The business delivers construction, refurbishment and improvement projects across healthcare, education, commercial, social housing and heritage environments. Its portfolio ranges from smaller works through to multi-million-pound projects, providing variety and the opportunity to learn how different projects are delivered.

Healthcare and education are particularly strong areas of its work, including occupied hospitals, mental-health facilities, schools and public buildings. You will learn how careful planning, communication and coordination help projects progress safely while buildings remain in use.

The company places genuine emphasis on teamwork, staff wellbeing and professional development. You will join an experienced team where you can ask questions, develop your skills and build a long-term career.

The Opportunity

As Junior Construction Project Manager, you will support experienced colleagues throughout the project lifecycle, combining time in the office with practical experience on site.

Your responsibilities will develop as you learn and will include:

* Supporting the day-to-day delivery of live construction projects

* Helping prepare and update project programmes and track progress

* Attending sites and liaising with subcontractors, suppliers and site teams

* Assisting with procurement of materials, plant and subcontract packages

* Learning to manage purchase orders, valuations, variations and project costs

* Preparing meeting notes, progress updates, photographs and project records

* Supporting quality checks, health & safety, snagging and project handover

This provides a grounding in both the practical and commercial sides of construction, helping you understand how decisions on programme, procurement and costs affect project delivery.

About You

Previous construction experience is essential. This may have been gained through a trade, site-based work, a technical role, construction administration or project coordination.

You do not need to be the finished article. We are looking for somebody who brings:

* A genuine ambition to develop a career in construction project management

* Good organisation and the ability to keep track of several tasks

* Clear communication skills and confidence dealing with different people

* A practical approach to solving problems and willingness to ask questions

* Good basic numeracy and an interest in learning about project costs

* A reliable, professional approach and willingness to work in both office and site environments

Basic Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel skills would be useful, together with a willingness to develop your IT skills.

A construction or project-management qualification would be advantageous, but relevant industry experience is more important than having a particular academic background.

A CSCS card would also be useful, with support available to obtain one. A full UK driving licence is preferred because the role involves visiting live projects.

What’s on Offer?

* £27,000–£30,000 basic salary

* Vehicle

* Practical training and mentoring from experienced construction professionals

* Support towards relevant construction and project-management qualifications

* Varied experience across healthcare, education, commercial and public-sector projects

* Increasing responsibility as your skills and confidence develop

* Genuine progression towards managing your own construction projects

This is an opportunity to build on the construction experience you already have, develop broader project-management skills and see a clear connection between what you learn and the responsibility you take on.
