Job description
Construction Project Manager | Main Contractor | Essex | £55,000–£65,000 + EV + Bonus + Benefits
An established family-run regional main contractor is looking to appoint a Construction Project Manager to join its team in Essex.
Applications are welcomed from experienced Project Managers, as well as ambitious and driven Site Managers who are ready to take the next step into project management.
This is an opportunity to join a collaborative business where your contribution will be valued, you will work closely with experienced construction professionals and you can develop your career through varied project responsibility.
The company delivers construction, refurbishment and improvement projects across healthcare, education, commercial, social housing and heritage environments. Its portfolio includes projects valued from approximately £20,000 through to £2 million.
Healthcare and education are particularly strong areas of its work. Projects within hospitals, schools and public buildings require careful planning, clear communication and close coordination with clients and building users.
You will become involved across the full project lifecycle, from pre-start planning and procurement through to delivery, commercial management, completion and handover. For candidates progressing from Site Manager, the role offers the opportunity to build on practical site experience and develop broader project-management skills alongside experienced colleagues.
The Opportunity
As Construction Project Manager, you will manage construction projects at different stages of delivery, coordinating the people, resources and information needed to deliver safely, to programme and within budget.
Your responsibilities will include:
* Managing projects from pre-start planning through to completion and handover
* Preparing and updating project programmes, monitoring progress and addressing delays
* Coordinating site teams, subcontractors, consultants and suppliers
* Organising procurement of materials, plant and subcontract packages
* Managing project costs, purchase orders, valuations, variations and forecasting
* Maintaining clear communication with clients and providing progress updates
* Identifying risks and resolving practical delivery issues
* Overseeing quality, health & safety, snagging and project close-out
The workload offers variety across sectors, project sizes and stages of construction. As you develop within the role, you will take responsibility for several live projects, balancing programme, commercial requirements and client expectations.
About You
You may already be working as a Construction Project Manager, or you may be an experienced Site Manager looking to progress into a role with broader responsibility.
Previous experience holding a Project Manager title is not essential. You will, however, need a sound construction background and evidence that you can organise work, coordinate subcontractors and help deliver projects successfully.
We are looking for:
* Relevant experience with a main contractor delivering construction, refurbishment or fit-out projects
* Strong practical knowledge of construction methods, sequencing and subcontract trades
* Experience managing site activities, programmes and delivery priorities
* Clear communication skills and confidence dealing with clients, colleagues and subcontractors
* Commercial awareness and an understanding of how decisions affect project costs
* Good organisation, initiative and a practical approach to problem-solving
* The ambition to take ownership and develop your project-management capability
For Site Managers looking to step up, experience contributing to procurement, client meetings, variations or cost control would be particularly useful. You should be keen to develop these skills further and broaden your responsibility beyond day-to-day site management.
Experience within healthcare, education, public-sector refurbishment or occupied buildings would be advantageous. Relevant experience across comparable construction environments is also welcomed.
SMSTS, an appropriate CSCS card and a construction-related qualification would be beneficial. A full UK driving licence is required.
What’s on Offer?
* £55,000–£65,000 basic salary, depending on experience
* Electric vehicle
* Company bonus scheme
* Company pension
* Training and continued professional development
* Varied construction and refurbishment projects
* A collaborative team of experienced construction professionals
* Long-term career progression
The business places emphasis on teamwork, staff wellbeing and professional development, offering an environment where you can contribute your experience and continue building your skills.
